I was channel surfing late last night and happened to catch Nancy Pelosi’s performance on David Letterman. Her appearance marked the start of the Democrat campaign to reach into the mainstream audience beyond that of the political activist class. This is a sort of trial balloon in the friendly confines of David Letterman’s show.

San Fran Nan played down her usual hard core edge and softened the tone for the late night audience. This was a good move on her part although the message was typical; Bush bad, the War in Iraq wrong, the economy bad, gas prices high…

My analysis is mixed because of her stealthy low key act. But make no mistake about the Democrat tactics; they are conniving, disingenuous and misleading. You have to listen as closely to what they don’t say as well as to what they do say. Actions speak louder than words and Democrat attempts to portray themselves as a viable solution to the war on terror is a lie. They have been a critical deterrent to our success in prosecuting both the efforts in Iraq and the War on Terror. Nancy Pelosi is a key player in such matters.

One of the first items of note in last nights act was that the Democrat leader could not bring herself to give the United States any credit for helping to thwart last weeks Terror in the Skies bombing plot out of Britain. I suppose one reason for that sleight could be that the FBI’s involvement included the same tactical methods that Democrats have been running opposition to in the states.

This is one of the items Democrats can’t speak about. Imagine what may have happened if the British and American authorities didn’t intercept chatter, follow money trails and bug phones! We could be looking at another 3000 or more dead.

Leader Pelosi actually stated that she is “the ultimate Security mom”. This coming from a person who has opposed every Bush administration initiative that was intended to help fight terror; including the popular NSA wiretapping program that is similar to the one that helped thwart the latest British terror plot.

More amazingly however was the continued criticism of such programs even in the face of their success. Pelosi mentioned that the United States was monitoring the phone calls of “your neighbors” with the intention of finding out if they were planning on robbing your house. What a nice little lie wrapped up in a silly liberal paranoid pleas.

It seems that lies and scare tactics are par for the course for Democrats when it comes to spinning their favorite charity; that being themselves.

Speaking of scare tactics wrapped up in a lie; did you catch that part where Pelosi stated that President Bush was preparing to phase out Social Security? Perhaps I should have made this a drinking game; one shot per lie. But then I would be a bit tipsy.

Other honorable mentions are where Pelosi made the comment that “all the polls” indicate that Americans would vote for a Democrat in their district if the election were held today. In reality she is actually citing one CBS News - New York Times opinion poll. But what she failed to mention is that the detailed statistics in that same poll found that 67% of those polled disapproved with the way Democrats were performing in Congress compared to 51% who disapproved of Republicans. That is a 16% margin for those keeping score. So all in all this is much blubber about nothing.

One of the biggest whoppers that Pelosi let loose was her claim that the Lieberman defeat in the Connecticut primary was a complete rejection of the Bush policies on the War in Iraq, energy prices, gasoline prices, cost of health care, “and the rest”….

Nothing could be further from the truth. The Lamont coup is a loud statement about the hard left influence on Democrat politics. Mainstream Connecticut however looks to be rejecting the Daily Kos crowd as Lieberman leads Lamont by 12 points in the latest Quinnipiac opinion poll on likely voters; another poll result that Democrats will keep quiet about.

Finally Nancy Pelosi stated that Americans are not any safer now than before 9-11. It seems to me that the Dem leader seems to forget that many of the walls of communication that failed us on 9-11 were lifted by the Bush administration. But we can do better so I am not going to fault her too much here other than to note that we have not been hit since that fateful day despite the Democrat games.

The most important item to note in all of this is that Nancy Pelosi wants to make President Bush a lame duck. Translation, two more years of opposition politics from Democrats who have earned a 61% unfavorable rating because of the last five and a half years of the same.

But that is not all they would do. If the Democrats managed to get control of Congress Nancy Pelosi would lead the pack in a failed attempt to impeach President Bush. The War on terror would come to a grinding halt, Iraq would be doomed to failure and Americans everywhere would be less safe as a result. This is not something I am willing to let happen without a fight. Let us hope that a majority of the American public feels the same in November.
