Video: Anti-War/Anti-American Icon Jane Fonda Endorses Barack Obama, American Left Runs for Cover

Friends of a Feather Stick Together

There really isn’t much more to say about this endorsement as it sort of speaks for itself. Let’s just mark this up as another anti-American a-hole in the circle of American lefties that endorse Barack Obama. Coincidence? I think not.

TMZ has the goods and the left is circling the wagons trying to distance their man from the ugly side of modern day American liberalism.

Barack Obama has tapped into a certain nerve of the American left; one that has a penchant for attracting the anti-American radical type.

This isn’t exactly the kind of endorsement that get the vote of middle America. But then again neither is Rev. Jeremiah Wright or William Ayers.

The left is reacting as expected. For Cover!! But you have to like it when they say the right is, ahem, well… right. Even the New York Times is running with it.

Jane Fonda, the actress and ardent anti-Vietnam War advocate who visited North Vietnam during those hostilities, has endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president,” reports the Los Angeles Times’s Andrew Malcolm.

Given the rather casual circumstances, that’s perhaps stretching the term “endorsement” to its utmost limit. TMZ (yes, the Opinionator is citing TMZ as a news source) has the video here.

While conservatives have jumped on the news in the expected fashion, the response from the left has been more surprising. Here’s Dustin, one of the contributors at Comments From Left Field:

Maybe it’s a generational thing but when news broke on Memeorandum that anti-Vietnam activist Jane Fonda supports Barack Obama my first thought was, “so what?”. But then I remembered a funny fact: conservative pundits often act like we’re still stuck in the 60’s Vietnam-fueled culture war. I’m sad to admit but in this instance they might actually be right, in a fashion.

With the presumptive Democratic nominee looking to face off with one of the very POW’s Fonda’s famous North Korean anti-aircraft photo-op put into danger Obama would be wise to distance himself from Fonda. Even if she is just another over-the-hill Hollywood elite answering an ambush reporter’s question she’s damning company to keep….

I consider myself pretty liberal and even abhor Fonda’s past actions. I’d think twice about supporting anyone she’s backing and I know I’m by no means alone in those feelings. Hopefully Obama’s people know that.

Perfect. Jane Fonda, the once revered leftist celebrity is now being thrown under the bus because it has just dawned on the left that middle America does not mean the Daily Kos anarchist type.

The New York Times even mentions the Operation Chaos angle indirectly with the Clinton conspiracy-non-conspiracy possibilities.

Why is this happening now — just before a critical contest that’s being treated in the press as essentially the Deer Hunter primary, one in which Hillary Clinton is trying to hold off Barack Obama with the help of pro-military working-class Democrats?” asks Steve M. at No More Mr. Nice Block, who also notes that Fonda has reportedly given money to the Hillary Clinton campaign.

“Is that evil Jane Fonda — using the L.A. Times, the hometown paper of the Clintons’ beloved movie industry — working hand in glove with the sinister Clintons to create bad press for Obama? Er, I doubt it — entertainers (left, center, or right) are rarely all that clever. I imagine she just changed her mind. But, hey, it’s a theory.”

I don’t think we need theories here. It will remain to be seen if Obama throws Fonda under the bus or if that is simply reserved for his white grandmother.
