Vandals Burn and Replace Flags With Swastikas on Veterans Graves

Event highlighted by Wikipedia as defining characteristic of Orcas Island, Washington

Sick is the only word to describe it.

Vandals struck veterans graves twice over the weekend at Orcas Island, Washington, by burning Memorial Day flags and replacing them with hand drawn swastikas. Imagine the outrage and sadness that must have been felt by the Veterans from the American Legion who had to replace the flags after each event.

ORCAS ISLAND, Wash. - Vandals burned dozens of small American flags that decorated veterans’ graves for Memorial Day and replaced many of them with hand-drawn swastikas, authorities said Monday.

Forty-six flag standards were found empty and another 33 flags were in charred tatters Sunday in the cemetery, authorities said. Swastikas drawn on paper appeared where 14 of the flags had been.

Members of the American Legion on this island off Washington’s northwest coast replaced the burned flags with new ones Sunday afternoon.

The vandals struck again on Memorial Day after a guard left at dawn, the San Juan County sheriff’s office said. This time, the vandals left 33 of the hand-drawn swastikas.

“This is not an act of free speech. This is a crime,” Sheriff Bill Cumming said in a statement released Monday afternoon. - (AP Yahoo)

There may be a silver lining here. The police are trying to work off of fingerprint evidence to track down the criminals. With any luck they will be caught and Ramsey Clark can defend them as skillfully as he did Saddam Hussein; a good stint in jail would suit these idiots just fine.

As for Wikipedia it figures. In gathering information on the island I uncovered a whole new level of “facts” as could only be spun by the American left. The relevance of this flag burning event in describing Orcas Island veers way off the encyclopedia path and has no place as a top level description on the island’s page.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Orcas Island is the largest of the San Juan Islands, which are located in the northwestern corner of Washington state in San Juan County, Washington. Orcas Island is one of four stops on the inter-island Washington State Ferry route serving the San Juans. Ferry access to the islands is achieved from the mainland terminal at Anacortes, Washington (between 45 minutes and an hour and fifteen minutes), or limited service from Sidney, British Columbia.

Vandals burned dozens of small American flags that decorated veterans’ graves for Memorial Day weekend, 2007 and replaced many of them with hand-drawn swastikas at a cemetary on Orcas Island both Sunday the 27th and again on Memorial Day the 28th.

I know that Wikipedians try to capture current events but I hardly think this event is worthy of note as a descriptive line item for the island. Thankfully the author didn’t add the reference in any positive light.

The attitudes of the American left are rampant on Wikipedia and I suspect that the person who added this entry is part of that crew.

Update/correction: I double checked the history logs and the user that I thought had originally added the flag burning section is just one of a few people who recently added content to this entry. The latest logs simply list an IP address as the author of the specific flag burning update and doesn’t list any specific author. I’m not sure how that happens but it is possibly an admin who added the reference. This article here has been updated to reflect that fact.

The bio of the user that I originally thought added the update is from Berkeley, California. The user’s bio lists the following:

  1. I was born in Berkeley, California just in time to be tear-gassed by Ronald Reagan near Peoples Park, but before I could remember anything, my family moved to

Apparently the user was either a participant or a spectator at the “Bloody Thursday” anti-war rally at Berkeley that turned into a riot on May 15, 1969. Ronald Regan was governor at the time and had taken a stand against the growing student demonstrations at the University.

Stop by the People’s Park page and read the description of the riot if ever you wanted to see how far to the left Wikipedia can go.

Here’s one short example of the single minded approach to facts as found often on Wikipedia:

During the occupation, National Guard troops were stationed in front of Berkeley’s empty lots to prevent protestors from planting flowers, shrubs or trees. Young hippie women taunted and teased the troops, on one occasion handing out marijuana-laced brownies and lemonade spiked with LSD.[8] A few stripped to the waist and danced for the young recruits, who tried to hide their smiles from superiors. Citizens who dared ask questions of National Guard commanders, or engage them in debate, were threatened with violence.

Yeah, it reads like a left wing novella with references to troops trying to hide their smiles and typical threats of violence; all for no reason of course. I wonder if pot brownies or LSD spiked lemonade is enough of a reason to threaten people who are trying to taunt you? Apparently not from the point of view of the American left who only judge those they loathe. I propose a new name here, Crapapedia would be more to the point.

The upshot is that every time anti-American idiots rear their ugly heads we peel away the layers to expose more idiocy from the American left - it’s never ending. With any luck repeated examples of such tripe will eventually marginalize the Berkley bred throwbacks who still cling to the loser hippie era.

Others: Michelle Malkin

Correction note. Although I often state that all roads left lead to Berkeley I can not make a sweeping generalization that all Berkeley graduates will do their work from the viewpoint of any specific political bias. In this case I was wrong about who added the specific entry and the user’s bio just happened to lead me to the left leaning Peoples Park entry by coincidence.
