The War Against Terrorism-It’s About Winning - Not About Defeat

WASHINGTON - The White House was halfway to its goal of winning expanded powers to eavesdrop on suspected foreign terrorists. Senate Democrats reluctantly agreed to passing a bill Friday night to update the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The House was expected to consider it Saturday after rejecting a Democratic alternative the night before.
The high-stakes showdown over national security hinged largely on how early a special court will review the government’s surveillance of foreigners’ overseas phone calls and Internet messages without warrants.
President Bush has demanded that Congress give him the expanded authority before leaving for vacation this weekend.
Good for the President because any historian will tell you that spying is a huge tool used in war. I think that those who do not recognize this or think that spying should not be a tool, both domestic and abroad lack commonsense.
“Al-Qaida is not going on vacation this month,” said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. “And we can’t either until we know we’ve done our duty to the American people.”
Exactly. Al-Qaida is not going on vacation and it is the duty of our congress to protect this country and the people who reside within it. This is their duty first and foremost.
In the House, Democrats lost an effort to push a proposal that called for stricter court oversight of the way the government would ensure its spying would not target Americans.
“We can have security and our civil liberties,” said Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass.
Democrats never seem to get it. What if the terrorist was an American, as is the case with John Walker Lindh? Are the Democrats suggesting that because one is born in the United States, one will not be a terrorist? We know that this is not always the case and if we look to Britain, many terrorists have been British born. They are people born in a free nation but raised by whack jobs.
In the case of Lindh, he converted to Islam and decided to betray his country. Perhaps a tap on Lindh’s phone could have led to something. Who knows? What we do know is that if we do not spy we will not have a leg up and we need to utilize every tool in our arsenal and the Democrats need to sit back and shut the hell up.
Unfortunately, during a time of war, some liberties are given up. During World War II people gave up purchasing new cars because all of the auto plants were working for the military. They also rationed everything, from sugar to flour, and yes, they were spied on. Somehow, the people of the 40’s had a bigger sense of nationalism, they put their country first. It is a shame that the Democrats, some Republicans, and some citizens do not share this view because this is what needs to be done. We must set aside what we think we are entitled to for the love of our country, the greatest country in the world.
