The Outrage of ‘Immigration Reform’

I have been pouring over the text of the immigration draft and listening to various radio talk show hosts discuss the intricacies of what is being proposed. The result of such research is beyond outrage.

At a time in history where traffic tickets are routinely issued automatically and remotely by radar triggered cameras I am being told that the Department of Homeland Security can’t even enter crucial information such as fingerprint and immigration citizenship applications into the system without a 24-hour hold. Speeding car vs. manual entry. As a software engineer I know this is a load of crap.

Nonetheless this 24 hour window gives illegal immigrants time to game the system and get multiple sets of documents under different names and identities.

Currently 79% of background checks that are determined to have problems with red flags such as being a potential terrorist or having a criminal background are cleared not out of any further investigation or check, but rather out of malaise; the DHS officials at Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) simply turns down the follow up in 79% of the cases and issues citizenship papers anyway. How will the new bill change this?

But this is just the beginning of a long list of problems that will not be addressed by the hastily drawn Senate bill.

  • President Bush is pushing an exemption on back taxes. In other words illegal aliens are being given a pass for something that you and I could be sent to jail for and most definitely would be penalized on top of.
  • Border enforcement is a second priority as is any thought of preventing a new wave of illegals.
  • We are still going to allow birthright citizenship; a provision of the 14th amendment that allows pregnant immigrants to come to this country and give birth, thus making the child an automatic U.S. citizen. This comes with all the perks and social services allowed legal citizens courtesy of U.S. taxpayers. It is a scam and needs to be amended.
  • The provisions on a medical examination as a requirement of entry is minute. The legislation is unnecessarily vague and only requires that the health status of the immigrant “conforms to generally accepted standards of medical practice.” I’d like to know whose standards?
  • Illegal Immigrants that are proven to be associated with gangs are “deportable”. This just means that they may be deported but does not have any guarantee.

So let me get this straight, an illegal alien who came to this country under false pretenses, joined up with a violent gang and is likely party to further crimes, some violent, may be deported? Remember, you don’t have to pull the trigger to be party to the crime.

Is it just me or are the members of Congress that drafted this bill looking to find any way to avoid protecting American citizens?

  • I noticed a ton of provisions where the penalties call for the imprisonment of illegal aliens that commit felonies. Why should our country take on this burden? They should be sent back to wherever they came from. We shouldn’t foot the bill to maintain these criminals.

There is so much more. Put aside the depressed wages caused by an influx of low skilled workers. The most deplorable part of this bill is the obvious focus on naturalization before a fully implemented plan to secure the nations borders. This is ass backwards and should not be negotiable. The other provisions are open for business as they say.

Finally there is a cost aspect that none of the proponents of this bill want to discuss. It isn’t too much to ask that Congress consider the costs of this bill. The CBO hasn’t even had a chance to look at the actual text of the bill and the Senate is proposing to push it through without an assessment of the cost. This is beyond irresponsible. American taxpayers have a right to know how much this is going to cost them. We are faced with a daily barrage of politicians who claim our country doesn’t have enough for health care, social security, law enforcement, disaster relief, education and all the other needs of our current population. Why should we come up with more ways to deplete these resources for non-Americans? This doesn’t make any sense.

These and many more provisions of the bill need answers. The obvious intent of Congress was to avoid such a discussion. Granted, we now hear that 3 weeks will be afforded for discussion but I am not sure that will even be enough, but its a start.

Keep the pressure on Congress. Let them now that their allegiances had better be with American citizens first or you will simply find someone else who is so aligned. They need your vote and with their current approval rating below that of President Bush the margin is very little. It’s time we brought accountability back to government.

Is this what we call representative government? If this was put to a vote by the American people it would certainly fail by a landslide so are we being represented??? As far as getting rid of illegals it is not complicated or hard. Enforcement of laws
on employers, make it so they cant use our schools, hospitals, food stamp program, welfare, roads etc. If we do this they will find their own way home just like they found their way here.

    Hi wshaw,

I would be willing to bet that a majority of Americans would consider compromise if the bill considered enforcement first. American’s have been deceived for way too long and there is no bigger bitter pill to swallow than the realization that the people you voted for favor the interests of big business over their obligation to lead and protect.

    It’s a sham!
