Spartanburg County straw poll, good news for Duncan Hunter

Results are in for the Spartanburg County Republican Presidential straw poll. No surprise that New York Cityformer Mayor Rudy Giuliani has 123 votes in the preliminary results. The big surprise is that Duncan Hunter was running in second place, with 110 votes. I am very pleased with these results.
In third place, Arizona Sen. John McCain at 86 votes, Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had 59 votes, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback had 68 votes and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee rounded out the front-runners, with 18 votes. (AP Wire)
The voting isn’t binding and comes as the county party goes about the business of organizing precincts and ultimately sending people to its county convention and the state GOP convention in May.
People attending meetings starting at 7 p.m. had the chance to vote on one of 11 GOP candidates that already have said they’re running for the nomination or have set up exploratory committees.
In case you don’t know Duncan Hunter, here a little background:
Hunter is politically conservative, but opposed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), and granting Communist China most-favored-nation status. He has supported George W. Bush’s tax cuts and greatly increased federal spending, and has been Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee since 2003. In 2005, responding to news that prisoners at Guantanamo had been abused, Hunter called a press conference and read a menu of food served at the prison, including oven-fried chicken, rice pilaf, fruit and pita bread, as proof that Gitmo’s prisoners are treated very well indeed.
He is especially enthusiastic about walling the Mexican border to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking. He claims responsibility for 59 miles of fencing that has been built, and he co-authored the 2006 Secure Fence Act, which announced 700 miles border wall across the Arizona, New Mexico and Texas borders, but provided no funding or timeline for constructing the wall.
… He opposes abortion, [embryonic] stem cell research, and in 2005, he authored The Right to Life Act, which would “implement equal protection … for the right to life of each born and pre-born human person.” (read more)
