Scholastic Pulls "Path to 9/11" Educational Resource Kit

Scholastic pulled their educational resource supplement to the ABC miniseries “The Path to 9/11” mini-series after the much reported Democrat theatrics surrounding the television event.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Children’s publishing company Scholastic said that it is removing materials from its Web site originally created for use in conjunction with ABC’s “The Path to 9/11″ amid growing controversy over the docudrama.

The company said it will create a new classroom discussion guide for high school students that focuses more specifically on media literacy, critical thinking, and historical background.

“After a thorough review of the original guide that we offered online to about 25,000 high school teachers, we determined that the materials did not meet our high standards for dealing with controversial issues,” Dick Robinson, Chairman, President and CEO of Scholastic said in a statement. - CNN Money

All references to the pre-released classroom kits have been removed from the Scholastic website. Luckily I managed to put together a near complete copy from the Google cache. You can read it here. (Note it may take a minute to come up in Internet Explorer because of scholastic plug-ins. Firefox users will not experience this delay).

Rather than spur a discussion that is necessary on the anniversary of the 9/11 educators will be given one less resource to help them in this effort.

The following excerpt is taken from the introduction to teachers:

The Path to 9/11 offers your students and their families important information regarding the causes of and events leading to that tragic day.

Encourage your students and their families to watch The Path to 9/11 and use the accompanying Resources and Discussion Guide pages to:

  • Track the historical time line of events before, during, and after 9/11
  • Lead critical discussions about these events
  • Use critical-thinking skills and analysis in classroom debate

It is important to look back over the past five years and consider the events that have occurred, what led to those events, and how they impact the future of our nation and the world.

Objectives:

  • To encourage students to gain a global understanding of communities and cultures
  • To engage critical-thinking and critical-viewing skills
  • To encourage student political awareness and involvement through discussion and debate
  • To promote media literacy to remind students to view what they absorb from the media with a critical eye

Nothing in the documentary would have threatened the objectives as stated in this letter to teachers. It is more likely that politically active teachers would have taken it upon themselves to steer the discussion in the direction their ideology points them. In any event there would have been a discussion centered on the events of 9/11 and somehow Democrats think this would have been a bad thing. It is a shame that politically active educators and CEO’s would choose to cheat students in the face of political pressure.

Read the rest of the kit for yourself and see if you can find anything that is questionable or inappropriate for your children.
