Rumor Has It That Mattel Will Announce the 3rd Chinese Toy Recall Wednesday

No big surprise here. It feels as though these Chinese recalls are a daily event. The latest recall involves the Fisher-Prices toys and accessories for Barbie playsets.
According to the AP:
Mattel Inc., whose reputation has been battered by two high-profile toy recalls this summer, will announce on Wednesday the recall of a third batch of Chinese-made toys because they may contain excessive amounts of lead paint, The Associated Press has learned.
The latest recall by the world’s largest toy maker will be for a Fisher-Price toy and accessories to a Barbie playset and involves several hundred thousand units, according to two persons briefed by Mattel executives who asked for anonymity because the company has not yet formally announced the action.
What is China’s most recent response:
Toy inspectors set fire to Elmo’s bulging white eyes, tugged on Dora the Explorer’s arms and scraped paint off a Barbie play set — tests they called a routine part of efforts to make sure Chinese products are safe for American children.
On the defensive after a series of embarrassing recalls, China’s government invited foreign journalists to go on factory visits Tuesday in hopes of repairing the image of toy makers battered by global worries about the “Made in China” label.
No facilities tainted by recalls were visited, and executives wouldn’t talk about troubles at competitors, but officials portrayed the sites on the one-day trip as fair representations of the high standards that China insists are followed by most of its export manufacturers.[emphasis mine]
I love this, China invites foreigners to ease the worries of foreign consumers but doesn’t allow them into the facilities that are in question. In my opinion, this is a classic China move; make it appear that they are concerned about the well being of people while the real factories operate at the same old slave labor and dangerous chemical levels. It is absolutely ridiculous.
