I have always been a huge Pink Floyd fan. They were one of my favorite all time bands throughout high school and college. Some of my best memories are associated with many of their songs and are the only connection I have to days long gone past.
The Roger Waters Bush Derangement Syndrome Tour
That is why I quickly bought up two $150 tickets to see Roger Waters when he announced his latest tour. After all, I had seen Roger Waters twice before and the shows were rock solid apolitical performances. It was all about the music; and it was great. This was before the advent of Bush Derangement Syndrome. So, as expected it was a simple agreement between the band to play the music and the fans who would cheer them on while partying with their friends.
So who would have expected his latest tour to turn into a MoveOn.org meets Code Pink video exposition when the tickets came on sale?
Nonetheless I had seen the reports after we bought the tickets and had to talk my wife into hanging in there. We had friends coming in and I didn’t want to ruin the good time we had planned. I wanted to make the best of a concert that we knew would be bogged down by the no longer subliminal messages of an aging socialist moron musician.
Unfortunately the concert was actually worse than I had imagined. Yes, the music was solid and the beer was flowing at $8.50 a glass. But the anti-American video polemic that was descending on us from the giant movie screen was too much even for my hard headed love of the music.
I’ll let the pictures that I came away with do the talking on this one. By now you have all seen the standard Kafka impeach Bush pig. But I ignored the reviews that dug into the other images such as American planes dropping napalm in Vietnam, the oil rigs, a couple of images with Arabic scrawled across them and of course the complimentary Cuban revolution plea.
This of course was topped off with the many Bush Derangement Syndrome images timed to coincide with lines from the song Eclipse. “all that you hate” – Image of George Bush, “and all that you buy, beg, borrow or steal” – image of oil rig, and on and on and on. You get the picture; all standard fare for the Democrat Party faithful who live at the Daily Kos.

These images are what ruined the show for me. It is really unfortunate because one concert by Roger Waters has permanently scarred my impression of the music I once loved.
There has always been a cynical side to music yet for the most part it was an expression of youthful exploration. That all changed in the late 60’s and early 70’s when the anti-war musicians took on the cause of the Vietnam War.
Nowadays you can hardly listen to music without being reminded of the bands anti-Bush rants. However most of them don’t bring it to the stage. Dave Matthews Band, who I have probably seen nearly 15 times, never spouted off in a concert I attended. Yes, he joined a political tour in 2004 but that was announced and to be expected.
Roger Waters on the other hand stole my money and my memories under the false pretense of his old band’s music. He is an ass to be forgotten.

You either had a really good camera or fantastic seats! I’m so jealous :) It’s amazing we have such similar tastes in music, but are near polar opposites politically. It’s a shame to hear that Roger Waters’s political views will keep you from enjoying the music :|

Yeah, I used to be quite liberally minded at one time. I will tell the story of what turned me some day soon.
On the music front I used to travel with bands for years as a sound man. I went to a very liberal school and studied music engineering and computer science. After school I continued working in both industries but the band travel was too hard to do with kids.
Concerts and photography are a refuge. I love the music and wouldn’t be able to turn on the radio if I didn’t somehow manage to separate the message from the music. Most bands don’t turn their concerts into political rallies. I will eventually get over this concert but it will be hard not to think about it when I hear the music.
I sometimes get overly defensive in tone on the political discussion front. But over time I have found that defensive jabs merely serve to shut down an exchange of ideas. It’s much better to discuss and agree to disagree. Not that always easy, but better!

Even though I am a Democrat, I do agree, the Bush-Bashing session are difficult to swallow. I often find myself shaking my head at the rampant knee jerk “>> Sucks!” comments. It holds us back from compromise and understanding.
It deleted out the “Insert Candidate Here” Sucks!
