The National Park Service and U. S. Navy will host a joint memorial ceremony commemorating the 65th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7 on board Naval Station Pearl Harbor’s Kilo Pier from 7:40- 9:30 a.m. The theme of the program is “A Nation Remembers.” The Kilo Pier venue looks directly out to the USS Arizona Memorial, situated in Pearl Harbor approximately half a mile away.

More than 1,500 Pearl Harbor survivors and their families and friends from around the nation will join 2,000 distinguished guests and the general public for the annual observance of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

The theme of this year’s historic commemoration, “A Nation Remembers,” will reflect on how the remembrance of Pearl Harbor has evolved throughout the years since World War II. During the war years, “Remember Pearl Harbor” became a battle cry for the nation, uniting the country to defend democracy and freedom. Today, “Remember Pearl Harbor” has taken on a different definition and provides an opportunity for reflection, a study of lessons learned and gratitude toward the Pearl Harbor veterans who served and those of their comrades who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

To put an exact number on the human toll both during and after that attack would be impossible. However we do know that 1,177 sailors and marines died on the USS Arizona alone. In all 2390 Americans were killed after Japanese planes hit the harbor where the whole U.S. pacific fleet had been stationed since 1940.

The Navy subsequently returned eight of sunken battleships back to battle as carrier escorts. Five of those ships would sink a Japanese fleet made up of Pearl Harbor veterans.

Never forget those who died in the service of this country. Without them we would not be free.
