This guy didn’t seem too impressed
I caught the last 30 odd minutes of Barack Obama’s town hall meeting at Fairfield Iowa on C-Span and it was barely watchable. The crowd response was tepid at best. Worse than the response was his delivery, he didn’t look Presidential, his speech was lifeless and most of all he didn’t sound Presidential.
I know you will hear elsewhere that the event was some sort of groundbreaking achievement but that isn’t what I saw. I watched a crowd that clapped meekly at all the right spots but none of it seemed enthusiastic and most was strained.
From a Democratic speech perspective he was right on target; perhaps that is the problem. The message is stale. I counted only a handful of claps when Obama talked about reducing the U.S. arsenal of nuclear weapons with the help of Russia. Can you imagine that? Putin, the guy who is paling up with world class anti-American thugs such as Hugo Chavez is going to help us to safety by removing our nuclear deterrent? This is a fools mission; a talking point that could only be tailored for clueless ideologues. Especially when you consider that North Korea, Iran and Pakistan are working to build their nukes up!
Another problem for the Illinois Senator was that someone forgot to stock the audience with enough Obama girls to make it seem like they actually gave a crap.
So Obama did what most Democrats do when they falter in front of a crowd, he dove into a history lesson on Selma, Alabama. This is perhaps the most pathetic hail Mary attempt to save a speech that I have seen in years. Barack Obama, the guy who voted in favor of furthering an immigration bill that most certainly would have hurt the African American community is talking about the advancements made in the civil rights era. How would most of those people react today if they knew that Obama was the guy canceling out their hard earned progress with low wage imported labor, much of it illegal?
I only managed to capture the last few minutes of the speech and only found one other YouTube clip from the event that had any of the speech at all. Pay attention to the lady in the front row, stage left at the end of the windup in the clip (see image, above left). She is indicative of what I saw. That whole row is lifeless.
These people must have been sitting next to Ben Smith.
Now I know that some people, such at Ben Smith at Politico, seemed to have attended some other cross dimensional Fairfield Iowa town hall event because they use phrases like Obama “wowed” the crowd. But the truth of the matter is that you can’t find video of the event anywhere despite having video of just about everything else that Obama does everywhere. It was even televised on C-Span. No, I don’t think its a conspiracy or anything like that, I just think that supporters of Obama have no desire to post anything but the most glowing of Obama events and this wasn’t one of them. As far as Ben Smith’s article goes I don’t know what to think. I just wonder why Smith spent the last half of his article talking about the Maharishi instead of Obama if there was so much wowing going on. They were there though so I say bring on the video to back it up.
Regardless of the perspective I have what I saw and this is my summary.
When are Democrats going to learn that we need a President who lives in today’s world? Who gives a shit if Barack Obama stood on Edmund Pettus Bridge? I certainly don’t because he is being disingenuous. Talk to me about civil rights when you aren’t using it as a device to score the vote of the weak minded and I’ll believe. A true black leader doesn’t need such shticks.
BTW, it is truly sad that people like Barack Obama are so pessimistic that they think you can only move history in a better direction “maybe once in a generation”. I cut the video at this sentiment because it is an example of one of the most ass backwards un-American ways to think imaginable and I want it to resonate. Barack Obama’s message, like most Democrats, is one that builds upon distress and settles for complacency rather than gives people hope and inspires the best. America needs better.

I have family in the area and they saw Obama’s speech at Fairfield. A pretty even mix of townies and college people. They told me he got a good reception. I don’t think he’s first in Iowa on the Dem side and he’ll need to step it up if he’s going to win the primary.

I was a bit surprised when I watched the speech because he usually comes off a bit better than what I saw on TV. I don’t doubt that he is well received in general but I think the speech was flat.
As you said, he’ll have to do more to win the Primary. He is lucky in the respect that Hillary is not well liked by the general population in terms of demeanor and trust.
