Missing WWII Pilot To Be Buried With Military Honors Today

AIR FORCE STAFF SGT. CHRIS FLAHIVE

Ensign Harry “Bud” Warnke was on a training run in the Koolau Mountains when his plane crashed on June 15, 1944. Warnke was 23 at the time.

A few days after the fatal crash, a search team found wreckage from Warnke’s plane on a mountain slope along with a shoe fragment buried at the site.

According to military reports from the time, items and remains from the wreckage were collected and buried at the site shortly before Warnke’s unit left the island to support World War II efforts. (src. The Honolulu Advertiser)

The family of Mr. Warnke was originally told that he had been lost at sea but Warnke’s sister Myrtle Tice was persistent in enlisting the help of Senator John McCain to get the military to reopen the case to find the pilots remains. Tice is 87 years old.

That persistence paid off as the the military located his remains nearly a decade after returning to the site in 1999.

They were initially told that Warnke was lost at sea, even though the Navy had sent a team to investigate the mountainous crash site. A shoe was found and buried there on June 17, 1944 — two days after the crash — but it was never marked.

It was not until four decades later that Myrtle Tice, Warnke’s only sister, enlisted the help of Sen. John McCain, a Republican from Arizona, to get the military to reopen the case.

But the process has been painfully slow, even after the military made an investigative visit to the site in 1999 and recovered items such as two 90-pound propeller blades and other pieces of wreckage that bore the number 82 — Warnke’s aircraft number.

The Navy had to complete an environmental assessment since the crash site is on conservation land. That document said the recovery operations would pose no significant threat to the environment. (src. Honolulu Star Bulletin)

Ensign Harry “Bud” Warnke will be buried today with Military honors at a site originally reserved for him by his parents in 1944.

78,000 servicemen and women are still missing from World War II. Of that number 35,000 are still deemed recoverable with the others being reported as lost at sea or entombed in sunken vessels.
