Mike Nifong To Be Disbarred

Looks like DA Mike Nifong is going to be disbarred due to his gross misconduct in the handling and attempted prosecution of the Duke Lacrosse players who were accused of raping an exotic dancer.
RALEIGH, N.C. - District Attorney Mike Nifong will be disbarred for his disastrous prosecution of three Duke University lacrosse players falsely accused of rape, a disciplinary committee decided Saturday. Even the veteran prosecutor said the punishment was appropriate.
“This matter has been a fiasco. There’s no doubt about it,” said committee chairman F. Lane Williamson.
Nifong sat motionless, one hand resting over his mouth, as Williamson recounted how he engaged in dishonest and deceitful conduct. He said Nifong’s early comments about the case — which included a confident proclamation that he wouldn’t allow Durham to become known for “a bunch of lacrosse players from Duke raping a black girl” — were purposefully designed to boost his campaign for district attorney.
Besides being disbarred Nifong faces more legal troubles down the road. Attorneys for the players are planning to seek criminal contempt charges against the former DA.
Moving on won’t be as easy for Nifong. Attorneys for the exonerated lacrosse players say they have more in store by way of legal action.
“I don’t think any of us are done with Mr. Nifong yet,” said Seligmann family lawyer Jim Cooney.
He announced plans to file a motion against Nifong in Durham County Superior Court within the week.
Brad Bannon, a lawyer for David Evans, said that motion would request that the court sanction Nifong with fines and contempt of court.
Nifong could also face civil lawsuits; Bannon’s partner Joe Cheshire said on Friday that he expects “extensive civil action.”
Lawyers are also pushing for an independent federal investigation into Nifong’s conduct. (src. ABC News)
Mike Nifong turned the legal system upside down. His actions had repercussions well beyond the lives that were sidelined by his misconduct. People lost trust in the American legal system which further translates to losing trust in the government in general.The damage will be long lasting.
Thankfully justice is finally being served and we can only hope that Mike Nifong’s ultimate punishment will send a strong message to others who may be tempted to use their political positions for personal gain.
Sorry, Mike, it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy.
