Melting Polar Ice Caps Spur Race To Claim Oil Rich Arctic

Normally when you read about melting polar ice caps you are confronted with a plethora of anecdotes from environmental hand wringers who seek to blame man for the meltdown. Compound that with a mix of oil interests, military buildup and an international race to claim contested areas of the Arctic and you would imagine that it would be fertile fodder for every left leaning special interest group looking for a new cause.
So I thought it particularly exceptional when the BBC wrote an article that mentioned none of the standard activist narrative when detailing a Canadian move to build two military facilities in the Arctic in further support of its claim to a contested area in the far North that just happens to hold an estimated 25% of the worlds untapped oil and natural gas.
Melting polar ice has led to competing claims over access to Arctic resources, including the Northwest Passage, a shipping channel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans currently blocked by ice during the winter months.

Mr Harper announced plans last month to build six naval vessels to patrol the passage.
Canada, Russia, Denmark, Norway and the United States also have competing claims to the seabed below the North Pole, an area containing as much as 25% of the world’s undiscovered oil and gas according to a US study.
The area is not currently regarded as part of any single country’s territory and is governed instead by complex international agreements.
Last week a Russian expedition sent a mini-submarine to the ocean floor four kilometres (2.5 miles) below the North Pole to further Moscow’s claim to the Arctic.
Moscow argues that waters off its northern coast extending to the North Pole belong to its maritime territory because an underwater feature, the Lomonosov Ridge, is an extension of its continental territory.
On Sunday, Denmark is sending a month-long expedition to the North Pole to study the same underwater ridge to see if it is connected to Greenland, a Danish territory.
The Danish team plans to collect data to map the seabed under the ice. (src BBC News)
Never fear however, when the reporters fail to step up to the plate you can be sure that the comment section will take over as evidenced by the sidebar feature that is reserved for the much sought after pull quote spotlight.

The Arctic should have a similar treaty but that’s been blocked by the US for over 20 years and Russia now claims half of it. America has laid claim to all of extra-terrestrial space.

It is sadly apparent that the left is filled with ungrateful dolts that care little that the United States was there to save their sorry asses every time they have been called upon to do it. They wouldn’t even have the luxury of free speech via the internet if it wasn’t for our “crony capitalism”.
Even though the BBC didn’t fill their article with environmental or anti-military propaganda you can see the lingering effects from the damage that the left has already caused. I think it is startlingly shortsighted for the left’s failure to recognize that their antiwar, pro-eco terrorism is the equally, if not more destructive and hateful than their claims against others. Their radicalism has given rise to a deranged lot.
