Lindsey Graham To Conservatives - ‘You’re Wrong’

First Senator Lindsey Graham called us bigots and told us to shut up from a speech in front of La Raza where he thanked Ted Kennedy for the immigration bill. Now Graham claims that he and others walked the plank to tell the conservative base “you’re wrong”. One can only hope that the plank is short.
The issue? Barrack Obama had introduced an amendment to the Senate bill that would have gutted the education and skill level requirements in favor of a softer standard based on family ties. The fear is that such a move would have killed the bill all together.
I’m for the education and skills requirements but there are so many problems with the bill that no sort of surgery can fix it. Graham is the one who is wrong. It should be back to the drawing table where border security and enforcement is the issue. Then we can figure out how to deal with the estimated 12-20 million illegal immigrants who are already here.
The amendment infuriated Graham, a South Carolina Republican with close ties to another presidential hopeful, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Pacing the Senate floor and waving Obama’s amendment, Graham loudly accused Obama of undermining a delicate agreement whose advocates have shown political courage.
Issues that require bipartisanship often fail, Graham said, “because some people, when it comes to the tough decisions, back away.” Obama’s amendment, he said, would destroy the bill’s prospects and bring special woe to Republicans—such as himself—who have endured conservatives’ searing criticism for backing it.
It would undercut “everybody over here who’s walked the plank and told our base, ‘You’re wrong,’” Graham said. “So when you’re out on the campaign trail, my friend, tell them about why we can’t come together. This is why.”
Obama briefly appeared stunned and demanded time to respond. The notion that his amendment would gut the bill “is simply disingenuous” he said. “It’s engaging in the sort of histrionics that is entirely inappropriate for this debate.” - Brietbart
No worries for Graham, the amendment was defeated and he can continue to offend borders first conservatives on this issue at least for another day.

The weakest arguments in the world have to be propped up with the words bigot and immigration. Rather than admit that the bill is a tragically flawed and unfair piece if legislation people like Graham appear in front of a group that calls themselves “The Race”, not a race or one of many races, and calls us bigots!
I didn’t think Graham could add insult to injury. But he managed to do just that even without lifting a finger.
In other developments Democrats with the help of key Republicans fought back an amendment introduced by Senator John Cornyn that would have barred criminals from gaining legal status. The proposal included those who had been ordered by judges to be deported.
The measure would have excluded anyone convicted of document fraud or identity theft, ignored deportation orders or committed felonies from gaining legal status.
Cornyn said the measure would ensure respect for U.S. laws, but opponents argued the amendment was too broad and would have gutted the legalization program and threatened the delicate compromise brokered by a bipartisan group of senators and the White House.
“This amendment would exclude hundreds of thousands from benefits in this bill and undermine the bipartisan compromise that members of this body worked so long and so hard to produce,” said Sen. Edward Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), a Massachusetts Democrat who help negotiate the measure.

Later the Senate adopted an amendment by Democrat Senator Byron Dorgan that would place a 5 year limit on temporary foreign workers. This is being called a killer amendment by proponents of the Bill. Of course Arlen Specter is working to reverse the provision.
WASHINGTON - A fragile compromise that would legalize millions of unlawful immigrants risks coming unraveled after the Senate voted early Thursday to place a five-year limit on a program meant to provide U.S. employers with 200,000 temporary foreign workers annually.
The 49-48 vote came two weeks after the Senate, also by a one-vote margin, rejected the same amendment by Sen. Byron Dorgan (news, bio, voting record). The North Dakota Democrat says immigrants take many jobs Americans could fill.
The reversal dismayed backers of the immigration bill, which is supported by President Bush but loathed by many conservatives. Business interests and their congressional allies were already angry that the temporary worker program had been cut in half from its original 400,000-person-a-year target.
A five-year sunset, they said, could knock the legs from the precarious bipartisan coalition aligned with the White House. The Dorgan amendment “is a tremendous problem, but it’s correctable,” said Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa. The coalition will try as early as Thursday to persuade at least one senator to help reverse the outcome yet again, he said. (- AP Yahoo)
Update II: Hot Air has a clip of Graham’s hissy fit on the floor. He is acting so undignified.
