A surprise announcement from John Edwards that he will in fact continue his Presidential bid despite his wife’s recurrence of cancer.

Mr. Edward’s made the announcement with his wife by his side.

John Edwards said Thursday his wife’s cancer has returned, but said he will continue his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“The campaign goes on. The campaign goes on strongly,” Edwards told reporters, his wife by his side.

The recurrence of the cancer - this time on Elizabeth Edwards’ bone - presents a setback for the couple, both personally and politically. But both said they would stick with their plans to campaign vigorously for the nomination.

“From our perspective, there was no reason to stop,” Edwards said. “I don’t think we seriously thought about it.”

Terrible news today that John Edwards‘ wife has had a recurrence of cancer in her lungs after a bout of breast cancer in 2004.

Newsday.com is reporting that John Edwards is expected to announce that his campaign will be put on hold and might drop out of the race altogether.

WASHINGTON — John Edwards is expected to suspend his presidential campaign Thursday, and might drop out of the race altogether, after doctors found his wife Elizabeth’s breast cancer had re-appeared in one of her lungs, according to a source close to the former North Carolina senator.

“He has always said his wife’s health comes first,” said an Edwards insider, who said as of mid-morning the candidate was choosing between two statements, one suspending his campaign, the other withdrawing from the race. “It’s heartbreaking for him and for her.”

Mr. Edward’s is expected to announce his plans at noon est. Internet users can watch the announcement live on North Carolina’s NBC affiliate.
