I generally agree with your comments. If either German or Italian American’s lost property due to unfounded allegations then it stands to reason that they should be compensated within reason, assuming that there is ample evidence to clearly indicate wrongdoing. Outside of that however I can not see how we could compensate anyone for being subjected to curfews, travel restriction or even internment. It is a point that many will fall on each side of the issue and surely could be debated ad nauseam.

The bar shouldn’t be that nobody complained about such language as was included in s 1354 or any other bill because there is a different spotlight on this immigration bill and perhaps people were not aware of the issue.

I would be opposed to the act being included in any bill as it is written. The fact that it is attached to an immigration reform Bill is underhanded although such unrelated attachments are not uncommon.

Worse however is that its inclusion detracts from the main debate of the immigration legislation (likely intentionally).

In truth, my two previous comments on this post relate to individuals who, without reading the bill, would jump on the bandwagon and believe the Fonte statement (see one of the first comments to this post in particular).

Now, having said that. IMO, clearly, there were wrongs perpetrated on Japanese Americans during the War. I believe that those wrongs to the Nisei were righted (to the extent that payments were made for properties lost)…it seems about $20,000 to each surviving Nisei.

Without getting into any depth debate here on this subject, it appears that a previous bill, Senate 1354 (2005) went unnoticed by everyone who is now in an uproar about Senate 1639 (2007). Nothing has really changed except the generally partisan politics that now plagues this Nation (and that pervades some of the more hateful Internet websites and assorted blogs - NOT suggested that yours or RT is in the group).

The question…were or were there not German Americans and Italian Americans who were declared enemies of the United States and then taken from their homes, subjected to curfews, limited in their travel, deprived of their personal property, and, in the worst cases, placed in internment camps?

I believe that the answer to this question is an affirmative one.
