Fred Thompson Holds a One Candidate Debate

Fred Thompson appeared on Hannity and Colmes last night while the declared Republican contenders battled it out with Wolf Blitzer on CNN. This was a brilliant move on his part. From a get to know you perspective you can’t get better than a one on one.

But it goes beyond that with the timing. Sean was able to ask Thompson some of the same questions that had been asked of the other bloated field in the official debate. This afforded the opportunity to answer them without the noise of 10 other people clamoring to make the same point. In that aspect I am with Thompson and would prefer to wait until the herd is thinned out a bit before entering a debate that is much more palatable for both him as a candidate and the audience (IMHO).
Of course Thompson risks getting himself edged out if he doesn’t get into the mix soon but I don’t think that time is here yet. Here is a short clip from the Hannity interview. I include the questions most pressing to the American public about the War in Iraq and a brief blurb on the Democrat poll driven defeatist strategy.
Favorite quote from the interview: “Harry Reid’s flat wrong. He’s already declared defeat. You know that’s one of those things that the American people have got to be disgusted over.” I think he read my mind!
Update: Thompson also discussed Iran. On the issue of threatening nukes he supports a policy of preemption if push came to shove:
HANNITY: If it’s clear that they’re getting close to getting the weapon, would it be your policy to support preemption as a means of taking out or wiping out those facilities, considering they’ve, you know, repeatedly threatened to wipe Israel off the map?
THOMPSON: Yes. Yes.
HANNITY: It would be?
THOMPSON: Yes.
On the Democratic candidates he was equally candid:
THOMPSON: It baffles me that we’re facing the bankruptcy of the nation and a global threat that we’re not really prepared to deal with, and they’re talking about some the things that they’re talking about, with the clichés that they’ve been using now for 15 years.
They think, by not being George Bush, that they can win this next election. They think that, because the pendulum swings as it does politically, and the Iraq war is unpopular, that all they’ve got to do is do this sort of thing, and it will fall in their lap. And if we don’t do things better and smarter, it will fall in their lap. (read the whole transcript here)
Surprisingly they didn’t get into immigration. Outside of Iraq and the war on terror this is the single most important issue facing American’s. I would like him to expand on comments he made last week when he discussed the Regan deal of 1986.
“Twelve million illegal immigrants later, we are now living in a nation that is beset by people who are suicidal maniacs and want to kill countless innocent men, women and children around the world,” the former Tennessee senator said. “We’re sitting here now with essentially open borders.”
He also spoke about immigration when he addressed the National Restaurant Association while in Chicago:
“Nobody believes them. It goes to the bigger issue of the lack of credibility our government has these days,” said Thompson, who was greeted with hoots and applause from the 2,300 convention attendees who filled a ballroom at the McCormick Place convention center.
My best guess is that he is leaning in the right direction based on what he wrote on Townhall.com:
We should scrap this “comprehensive” immigration bill and the whole debate until the government can show the American people that we have secured the borders — or at least made great headway. That would give proponents of the bill a chance to explain why putting illegals in a more favorable position than those who play by the rules is not really amnesty.
We definitely need to understand how he plans to tackle the immigration in more concrete terms. It’s one thing to say all the right things for the sake of an audience or an attention grabbing headline but it’s an entirely different thing to speak about the issue in depth. We need some added insights into his plan to deal with the issue. I’m waiting with baited breath along with millions of others who feel let down with the latest Senate shamnesty bill.
