Flashback to Summer of 2001: Are We Back to Thinking That This Stuff is Serious In-Flight Trouble?
Teri O'Brien on Jul 16 2007 at 8:48 am | Filed under: Culture Watch, Feature Article, Linkfest
Exactly six weeks before 9/11/01, I flew home from Los Angeles where I had appeared on what was then a hot TV game show, “The Weakest Link”. Some of you may recall the little incident that I had on that flight involving an aging Baby Boomer, arrested development case and which caused the flight attendant to say “some men don’t understand that they just can’t touch any woman they want,” and me to write “Right, and some of them become president, serve 2 terms and then go make speeches for big bucks, so who can blame these other dorks?” (You can read more of my Weakest Link diary here.)

The summer of 2001 was the summer of shark attacks and Chandra Levy. It was also a time when we thought of passenger tiffs and flight attendants in a snit as serious problems on airplanes. Now in the summer of 2007 with democrats in Congress as determined as ever to live up to one of several well-deserved names I have for them, the September 10 Party, we have the story about the woman and her toddler son getting kicked off a plane because the kid kept repeating “Bye bye plane” during the flight attendant’s safety speech.
Isn’t the prominence of this story today just perfect? It’s this summer’s shark attack story. It lets the Americans who have forgotten that millions of determined fanatics wake up every single day plotting to murder as many of us as possible pretend 9/11 never happened. I’m thinking of the well-intentioned people besotted with wishful thinking who call C-SPAN praising Cong. Ron Paul for his “non-interventionist” ideas about foreign policy, or the moonbats afflicted with Bush Derangement Syndrome who claim that the War on Terror is a scheme by the evil, greedy, war-loving administration to needlessly scare us so that they can tap our phones and ask librarians what books we check out. And the democrats in Congress. We can’t leave them out. I’ll bet many of the people sitting at their desks on the 100th floor of the World Trade Center, sipping their coffee on a beautiful late summer morning were “non-interventionists.” I doubt that they had time to reflect on that policy and wish that our enemy were equally committed to the idea before they had to choose between dying of smoke inhalation or leaping to their deaths.
Wishes are for children like this 19-month old, but were we to indulge in them for a moment, we’d all say we wish that these Islamofascist maniacs didn’t want to kill us and take the world back to the 7th century.
Wait, that’s unfair. The more “progressive” ones only want to go back to the 13th century, ok? Sorry about that.
Either way, that’s not the cool sort of time travel that most of us would like to try, particularly if it’s preceded by more fiery attacks on our office buildings and airplanes. Pretend, like wishes, is also for children.
Thank God that at least for now, we still have grownups trying to protect us by fighting not only the war against our enemies, but the war against the 5th column here at home. I won’t be at all surprised later today if I see a news conference featuring Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi announcing the introduction of important legislation “The In-Flight Toddler Protection Act of 2007.” Remember—It’s for the children.
