Feds Say Watch Out For Terrorist Dry Runs On Planes

The feds have told the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), air marshals, and other law enforcement agencies to be on the look out for terrorists attempting dry runs with mock explosives.
Airport security officers around the nation have been alerted by federal officials to look out for terrorists practicing to carry explosive components onto aircraft, based on four curious seizures at airports since last September.
The unclassified alert was distributed on July 20 by the Transportation Security Administration to federal air marshals, its own transportation security officers and other law enforcement agencies.
For me, this is a no-brainer. Terrorists will do whatever they can to find weaknesses within our security system so naturally they are doing dry runs. It is ridiculous however to treat this as something new, especially since we have all been aware of the dry run scenarios for quite some time. (See here and here)

The AP highlighted (as first reported by NBC) some of the “dry runs” that have been caught:
- San Diego, July 7. A U.S. person — either a citizen or a foreigner legally here — checked baggage containing two ice packs covered in duct tape. The ice packs had clay inside them rather than the normal blue gel.
- Milwaukee, June 4. A U.S. person’s carryon baggage contained wire coil wrapped around a possible initiator, an electrical switch, batteries, three tubes and two blocks of cheese. The bulletin said block cheese has a consistency similar to some explosives.
- Houston, Nov. 8, 2006. A U.S. person’s checked baggage contained a plastic bag with a 9-volt battery, wires, a block of brown clay-like minerals and pipes.
- Baltimore, Sept. 16, 2006. A couple’s checked baggage contained a plastic bag with a block of processed cheese taped to another plastic bag holding a cellular phone charger.
Personally, I would like to see the actual profile of the people they detained in conjunction with these “dry runs”, however, it is the MSM so I fully expect to be under informed.
Even more disturbing is the revelation that some airports, such as Phoenix Sky Airport, are admittedly considered to be unsafe from a security perspective. ABC’s Lisa Fletcher did an investigative report and found that TSA officials take a regular 4½ hour break each night while passengers are given a free pass to walk through the security check point with whatever items they want, UNCHECKED! No security check, no oversight, nada.
Vigilance is only one way to keep our country safe; we have to keep our eyes and ears open. It is not just up to the TSA, air marshals, or other law enforcement, it is also up to us. Americans, stay alert. Report suspicious activity no matter how silly you may feel. It just may save lives. Of course if Democrats have their way you won’t be able to report this kind of activity without the fear of being sued.
