An Islamic militant leader, wanted for kidnapping two Chinese engineers in Pakistan in 2004, has blown himself up to avoid arrest, Pakistan police say.
Abdullah Mehsud, who spent 25 months in custody at the US base in Guantanamo Bay, died in south-western Balochistan province, a police spokesman said.

Analysts say the kidnapping was an attempt to secure the release of al-Qaeda militants held during army operations in South Waziristan.
Since his return from Guantanamo Bay, Mehsud became a hero to anti-US fighters active in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. (Src. BBC)
Although the BBC mentions that Mehsud was in Guantanimo they fail to mention his true sordid past. In 2004 the Washington Post wrote an article about detainees that had been released only to return to the fight.
At least 10 detainees released from the Guantanamo Bay prison after U.S. officials concluded they posed little threat have been recaptured or killed fighting U.S. or coalition forces in Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to Pentagon officials.
One of the repatriated prisoners is still at large after taking leadership of a militant faction in Pakistan and aligning himself with al Qaeda, Pakistani officials said. In telephone calls to Pakistani reporters, he has bragged that he tricked his U.S. interrogators into believing he was someone else.
The person that WaPo was talking about is none other than anti-American hero Abdullah Mehsud. Not coincidentally some members of the BBC actually used Abdullah Mehsud’s release as a call to question the validity of the Guantanamo detainees. The twisted logic is that if they didn’t know his true identity then how could they have possibly held him there in the first place? (forgetting of course that he was caught on the battlefield)
Yes, the American people must ask as to why he was released from Guantanamo because that shows that the people who were being held in Guantanamo Bay, there was not enough information about them. It was a failure of intelligence, or maybe Abdullah Mehsud with his one artificial leg, they thought he can’t do much. At that time nobody knew him, because he became famous after he came back to Waziristan. Then he became a commander.
He would give speeches in the mosque, in the madrassas. In public meetings he would try to motivate the people to fight the Americans, the government, the Pakistan army. And that’s how he became famous because they said, “Look, if this man with one leg can fight his enemies, why can’t we?” So he was an inspiration for so many people. (pbs)
Among other activities Mehsud is reported to have been behind the 2004 bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad. He was definitely not a good person and only achieved a status as a hero among groups of people that we shouldn’t have any sympathy for anyway.
Mehsud said he spent two years at Guantanamo Bay after being captured in 2002 in Afghanistan fighting alongside the Taliban. At the time he was carrying a false Afghan identity card, and while in custody he maintained the fiction that he was an innocent Afghan tribesman, he said. U.S. officials never realized he was a Pakistani with deep ties to militants in both countries, he added.
“I managed to keep my Pakistani identity hidden all these years,” he told Gulf News in a recent interview. Since his return to Pakistan in March, Pakistani newspapers have written lengthy accounts of Mehsud’s hair and looks, and the powerful appeal to militants of his fiery denunciations of the United States. “We would fight America and its allies,” he said in one interview, “until the very end.” (WaPo)
So you see, the United States can’t win even when they are correct on having captured an anti-American militant. People who advocated for the release of terrorists such as Mehsud are the same people who helped tie the hands of investigators looking to interrogate these prisoners for information. The result, more death and destruction.
Mark Jacobson, a former special assistant for detainee policy in the Defense Department who now teaches at Ohio State University, estimated that as many as 25 former detainees have taken up arms again. “You can’t trust them when they say they’re not terrorists,” he said.
The very nature of Mehsud’s existence, activities and self inflicted suicide contradicts the popular theory that Guantanimo is one of the catalysts that drives Islamic terrorists to fight the United States. He was a terrorist long before he became a detainee. The fact of the matter is that murderers like Mehsud were picked up fighting alongside the Taliban as enemies of the United States. They were picked up on the battlefield, complete with false identification, secure in the knowledge that Democrats and their supporters on the American left would rally for their release.
They were right.
