China Suspends Some U.S. Food Imports

China is retaliating against U.S. business interests because someone had the gall to point out that the Eastern Asian country is quietly poisoning themselves and the rest of the world with substandard products that wouldn’t be fit to feed to a dog (literally).
BEIJING - China has suspended imports from several major U.S. meat processors, including the world’s largest, in the latest indication the government may be retaliating as its products are turned back from overseas because of safety concerns.
Frozen poultry products from Tyson Foods Inc., the world’s largest meat processor, were found to be contaminated with salmonella, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said on its Web site late Friday.
Other imports barred by China included frozen chicken feet from Sanderson Farms, Inc. tainted with residue of an anti-parasite drug, as well as frozen pork ribs from Cargill Meat Solutions Corp. containing a leanness-enhancing feed additive, the AQSIQ said.
A spokesman for Cargill denied the agency’s claims, while officials at Tyson and Sanderson Farms were not immediately available to comment. (src. AP News via Yahoo)
Anyone who thinks that it is in our nation’s best interest to be doing business with China is a fool. We can thank our elected leaders for the mess we are in. Our government has been placating China for way too long. Instead of pulling themselves into the 21st Century they have taken the opportunity to manipulate financial markets, steal our defense technology (when it wasn’t being sold to them by greedy politicians and their business partners), put toxic lead based toys on the market and send food grown in sewage and pumped up with antibiotics over for our eating pleasure.
Now they are going to boycott us?
The AP, as is usually the case, is running with their “objective assessment” by touting the progress China is making toward cleaning up the problems.
Beijing has taken significant steps in recent days to clean up its product safety record, including executing the former head of its drug regulation agency for taking bribes and banning the use of a chemical found in antifreeze in the production of toothpaste.
Officials also have vowed to better integrate its fractured regulatory system, which splits responsibility among at least six agencies. The blurred lines often enable the country’s countless illegal operations to escape detection.
The Chinese government has thoroughly investigated each case of substandard products, said Li Yuanping, director of the AQSIQ’s import and export bureau, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Saturday.
“All of them are exceptional cases,” he said, noting that more than 99 percent of China’s exports meet standards.
“There is no such thing as zero risk. In term of food safety, it’s impossible for any country to make 100 percent of their foodstuff safe,” he said. “China-made products should not be labeled as substandard just because of a few bad producers.”
The problem is that the more we learn about Chinese products the more horrified we get. Perhaps it’s not possible to make anything 100% safe but you are going to have to do better than the figure that is currently at 20% on the bad side by China’s own assessment. A percentage that I would bet to be on the low side.
This is one of those issues that strikes concern on both sides of the political spectrum.
Yet China thinks they can strong arm us into meeting their demands that we trust them! Sorry Jack, trust but verify doesn’t even cut it in this case. (sadly the US FDA isn’t even doing that well on the verify front).
China will not get the message until Americans actually start fighting back. Keep in mind that the Bush administration is looking to continue trends of previous administrations and expand trade with China, including the expansion of Chinese food imports.
I personally look for food that is primarily grown in the USA. On the electronics front it is a bit harder to discriminate but I am looking for goods manufactured in places such as Japan, South Korea, Germany and France to name a few. It’s time to send your own personally tailored message back to China; mine is simple, “shove it”.

I’m with you. No more products made in China! Another thing we ought to do is contact our local grocery stores and tell them we won’t be buying Chinese products anymore. That goes for Target and whatever stores you frequent. Management needs to know the deal. Maybe it will encourage them to carry more USA products.

Hi Little Foxy,
I just got back from the grocery store with my child. I purposely put a bunch of stuff in the cart and then we sifted through them looking for the made in China label. As we found the products that were made in China we vociferously returned them to the shelf and looked for a US made alternative.
The most fun was in the packed produce section where there was plenty of grown in the USA labels. The ew’s and yucks coming from my kid was hilarious as we happened across products that weren’t made in the US. Funniest was when a lady next to us started looking for the made in the USA label as well.
What a great experience!

Bad news. I had to go get a present for a baby today. There literally weren’t ANY toys made anywhere else but China. I found one French stuffed animal, but other than that, EVERY SINGLE TOY is made in China. Fisher Price, Leap Frog, Parents Choice, EVERYTHING. Jason and I checked every box. I’m sorry to say, we had to get a present and it wasn’t the French thing.
What can be done about that?

About the Walmart comment, you can’t fault a company for wanting to provide cheap goods. There are a lot of people, myself included, who depend on Walmart or KMart or Target for the inexpensive things. We don’t all make six figures. If I did, then I’d be able to pay more for the necessities but as it is, I can’t and so Walmart is just what we can afford. And, there is no viable way to make those products here for reasonable prices. The unions wouldn’t allow it, and not only that, the minimum wage standard makes it impossible to lower the prices to that of Chinese products.
I discussed this with my husband today and his explanation is that China is just now going through their industrial revolution and their economy is growing 4 times faster than before. They cannot keep up governmentally with all the changes. Thus, there are going to be screw ups like the ones we are seeing. He also said we’ve made similar mistakes (i.e. lead paint on everything. they’re still removing lead paint from some of our schools) He also said we used that same chemical they found in the toothpaste too before we knew it was harmful. Although I don’t see it as an excuse, and I think they should be able to take our example or ask us for help in that department before lacing their toothpaste with poison, I guess it is somewhat of an explanation.
We’ve decided, here at the Fox household, that they aren’t doing it intentionally but are experiencing growing pains that we, unfortunatly, are going to feel.

Anyway, here’s a link to a great site I found about finding American made toys. http://www.howtobuyamerican.com/bamw/bamw-051112-toys.shtml
next time I buy toys it will be from one of these places. I did manage to find some that are comparable in price. The handmade ones are not, but the plastic ones are pretty much the same. The only thing is, they have to be ordered online since not many are carried in the stores. UGH.
