Officials give another warning on the counterfeit Chinese toothpaste stating that not only does it contain diethylene glycol, an ingredient found in antifreeze, but also contains harmful bacteria.
BOSTON (Reuters) - Health authorities in Canada and Massachusetts are warning consumers of the risk from China-made counterfeit toothpaste after more tainted products were found, deepening concern about the safety of Chinese goods.
Preliminary tests conducted in Canada on counterfeit Colgate toothpaste indicate the fake products may contain even more harmful bacteria than authorities first suspected, Health Canada officials said on Friday.
Canadian authorities urged consumers on June 29 to avoid Chinese toothpaste in the Canadian market because 21 products were found laced with harmful levels of diethylene glycol, an industrial solvent used in some antifreeze products.
New York-based Colgate-Palmolive Co. has said the products are fakes and that it does not use, nor has ever used, diethylene glycol as an ingredient in its toothpaste anywhere in the world. The chemical, also known as DEG and sometimes illegally used as an inexpensive sweetener and thickening agent.
It is time to boycott China. We are dealing with a government that does not care about the health of their own people, therefore it is safe to assume that they do not care about the health of anybody else.

With all the new and continued commotion about tainted and counterfeit toothpaste, I called the 800 # of my favorite toothpaste to get to the real story. Turns out The Natural Dentist brand of toothpaste and oral care products, which I love, is made in the USA with natural ingredients. They would never use a chemical like the anti-freeze one found in the toothpaste from China. I’m happy to know that the best tasting toothpaste in the world, The Natural Dentist, is pure! Try it yourself!
Hi Toothy Grin,
We are constantly looking for natural products that are more along the lines of organic products, antibiotic free, etc.
If only we could find toothpastes that were free of sodium lauryl sulfate. I am hypersensitive to it and have problems switching, but of course products made in the USA without the toxins found in offshore manufacturers are the way to go.
I will give it a try. - Webloggin ed.
