Update: The poll is still running today, Sep 15, 2008. The total vote count is now 374,872 votes and McCain is still running away with 60% of the vote at 224,755.

The Change America Can’t Afford campaign is waking up this morning to some pretty bleak numbers. An AOL straw poll has tallied a total of 321,168 votes over a three day period with John McCain getting 60% of the votes cast in a head to head contest.

Straw polls like this are important because they are done in a random fashion without questions that can be tainted by any bias from the pollster.

The ongoing poll started a day before the hapless Obama campaign launched a new attack ad against John McCain by making fun of his computer usage only to learn that McCains war injuries are the reason he can’t type on computers all that well.

This can’t bode well as the media starts a new round of the same ol’ same ol’, defending Obama by characterizing criticism of him as being racist. This too will fail as Americans see that Barack Obama is receiving over 90% of the black vote and celebrities like Oprah try to feeze out Sarah Palin.

I too am puzzled by the results of the AOL straw poll. It’s either flawed or a true indication of the how those who voted feel about the candidates. The truth will out after the election next week.

It’s maybe analogous to Nixon’s “Silent Majority” syndrome of voters who don’t say much except at the voting booth.
