Al Qaeda Scores 1st Win From Upcoming Congress – Warrantless Wiretaps Likely To Be Shelved

It took only 5 days for terrorists to reap the benefits of the upcoming Democrat lead Congress. To add insult to injury, it was none other than Gulag touting Dick Durbin who reminded us that the will of the terrorists is more important to the upcoming 110th Congress than the will of the American people.

WASHINGTON – Legislation aimed at President Bush’s once-secret program for wiretapping U.S.-foreign phone calls and computer traffic of suspected terrorists without warrants shows all the signs of not moving ahead, notwithstanding President Bush’s request this week that a lame-duck Congress give it to him.

Senate Democrats, emboldened by Election Day wins that put them in control of Congress as of January, say they would rather wait until next year to look at the issue. “I can’t say that we won’t do it, but there’s no guarantee that we’re going spend a lot of time on controversial measures,” Democratic Whip Richard Durbin of Illinois said Thursday.

In Senate parlance, that means no.

True to form, the Associated Press continues to foster the idiotic notion that monitoring the phone calls of terrorists is a Bush goal as opposed to a popular program supported by 79% of American’s.

Republicans for months have known that no bill accomplishing Bush’s goal could get filibuster-proof support from 60 senators. Sealing off any hope was what Democratic leader Harry Reid put on his lame-duck to-do list. The warrantless domestic surveillance bill was conspicuous in its absence.

As for next year, Bush should not expect Democrats to allow such legislation to pass without language establishing considerable congressional oversight of any expansion of warrantless wiretaps.

A Quinnepac University poll on Feb 29th, 2006 found that 79% of Americans thought that “the government should continue monitoring phone calls or e-mail between suspected terrorists in other countries and people in the U.S.,”.

Democrat supporters don’t take exception with this number. Rather they glom onto another part of the poll that says Americans are spilt on the legality of such action by 55% supporting the notion that it was illegal.

Hence the need for new legislation.

But this story as reported today by the AP is not really coincidence at all. Its wire release just happens to coincide with the November 10th launch of the moonbat lead Impeach for Change movement. In fact the claim that President Bush acted illegally in this wiretapping program is critical to the this impeachment effort.

On Saturday, Democrats.com and our progressive allies will launch a nationwide grassroots mobilization for impeachment in Philadelphia near Independence Hall, where the Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. The mobilization is called ImpeachForChange. Our goals include:

  1. A grassroots petition drive to collect 1 million signatures at ImpeachForChange.org
  2. Form Impeachment Committees in all 435 Congressional Districts to lobby every Member of Congress by:
delivering books & videos on impeachment
collecting petitions and handwritten letters in front of their District Offices
meeting with every Member to discuss the issues that require impeachment

So there you have it. Once again we see that the American left is less concerned with protecting American’s from terrorists than they are with propping up an impeach Bush movement by ensuring that warrantless wiretapping is kept on the shelf.

It took less than a week for the Al Qaeda celebration on Wednesday November 8th to turn into a tangible result in favor of perpetuating their ability to commit acts of violence against innocent American’s. It figures that Democrats like Dick Durbin would act as the terrorists spokesperson yet again.

  1. [...] While those who put the Democrats in charge want to start talking to the terrorists and getting to know how they feel, maybe throw a few hugs their way, we have the Democrats in power already ripping up our defenses: (h/t Webloggin) Legislation aimed at President Bush’s once-secret program for wiretapping U.S.-foreign phone calls and computer traffic of suspected terrorists without warrants shows all the signs of not moving ahead, notwithstanding President Bush’s request this week that a lame-duck Congress give it to him.
